Why an ASHI membership is important.

ASHI has very rigid and credible standards regarding certification. A fully certified member is required to pass the National Home Inspector Exam.  It takes up to four hours to complete 200 questions within a monitored/proctored setting. The National Home Inspector Exam is given only in certain locations by professional testing groups. The Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors charges $225 for the test. If a passing score is not obtained, the test must be retaken, but it will not be the same exam.

In 2007 the full ASHI membership fee was $399. ASHI requires continuing education each year along with other demanding requirements prior to receiving ASHI certification.

ASHI standards are used by some states for home inspector licensing and the National Home Inspector Exam is currently used by 19 states for home inspector licensing. Some well known consumer advocates such as Clark Howard recommends checking for ASHI certification when choosing a home inspector.

There are a number of other good organizations with similar standards and testing requirements, two of which are the Georgia Association of Home Inspectors (GAHI), and the National Association of Home Inspectors (NAHI). As one would expect, there are organizations at the other extreme that use less stringent membership criteria and are less costly, and consequently they may enlist many members.

I have elected to retain my ASHI certification because I strongly believe it is the most meaningful and credible home inspection certification available.

More about ASHI can be found on their website:  www.ashi.org

I am not certified by NACHI (National Association of Certified Home Inspectors).
